From Huaca

The word Huaca comes from the Quechua language, which was spoken by the Incas in the 15th and 16th centuries and means holy, but also spirit. Spirits that live in living beings, but also in, for example, waterfalls and mountains.

The instrument is based on the centuries-old clay flutes. The creator of the first designs of this flute was Sharon Rowell in the 80's. She wanted to imitate the sound of a fog horn and thus discovered the possibilities of a 3 chamber flute. The name changed over time from three double ocarina to Huaca . Sharon has unfortunately passed away, but there are still flute makers who have further developed her ideas.

Giuseppe Siggia

Lives in Italy, plays several instruments and makes Huaca's but also Ocarian's flutes and Urdu drums. He himself started playing in 2012. In Italy he was the first person to make the Huaca and has had exhibitions in several ocarina museums.

The sound

Who better to play on that maker, here's the sound on Youtube of the Huaca

The order

Via Facebook I saw one of his instruments that appealed to my imagination in both form and sound. I contacted him via his website and after I placed the order I was kept very well informed about the progress. It was delivered very quickly and well packaged on Saturday 4-6-2022, but because I was not at home I picked up the package at the post on Monday.

Although I have small hands I can play it well. Giussteppe already said that you should not blow it as hard as a flute, that takes some getting used to. You can also play with circular breathing, which I will have to practice. The sound is beautiful.

The clay

His Instruments are made with clay that he has extracted by hand from places with a rich history from the sea to the mountains. The clay is processed in its altellier without chemicals with the addition of rain and river water.

He also makes the glaze himself from natural raw materials, using techniques that were already used by the Romans and Greeks.
